West Hill Primary School

I was first introduced to West Hill Primary school 3 years ago when I was asked to lead a Rainforest dance Workshop day for Key Stage 1 and a Street Dance workshop for key stage 2.

After two great days of dance with the children and lots of positive feedback from parents and governors I was asked to come and teach dance at the school on a regular basics. I enjoy working with all the different year groups and always admire their energy and commitment to dance.

“We are really delighted to welcome Katie back at West Hill Primary School for a second year of exciting dance teaching. Katie began teaching dance here during the 2014-2015 academic year. She inspired our Key Stage 1 children with ‘creative dance’ and really captivated our Key Stage 2 children with ‘street dance’ during a two day introductory programme.

Parents were invited to an amazing performance at the end of each day and couldn’t believe how much the children had learned in such a short space of time. Katie’s lively and engaging teaching style really inspires and motivates every child, irrespective of ability.

Following on from the success of these two days, we then booked Katie for the rest of the year to teach six weekly sessions to each year group, all of which were based on a themed dance selected by each class teacher. For example, Year 2 chose dance based on the book ‘Funny Bones’ by Allan Alberg.

We have been so impressed with Katie that we have invited her back for the 2015-2015 academic year. Both teachers and children are very excited that she will be returning and are busy selecting their themes, many of which will be based on our prescribed curriculum units of work. In the summer term 2016, we will be inviting Katie to help with the choreography of our summer show. It promises to be a great year for dance at West Hill Primary School.”

Sue Bedford – Arts Coordinator, West Hill Primary School

“As the Arts Coordinator it has been my aim to raise the profile of dance at West Hill Primary School.

Katie’s experience, knowledge and enthusiasm has meant that as a school, all year groups have experienced high quality dance sessions. Teaching staff have worked alongside Katie and been given the support and guidance that they have individually requested to enable them to plan and teach dance as part of our school curriculum.

The Street Dance sessions in particular have been a great success with all the children and were a great way to get the older boys moving. In the new academic year, we are now planning to expand the children’s experiences further by developing themed dance sessions that will link with the children’s topic work. The staff and children, look forward to our continued working partnership with Katie.”
